Have you ever asked an AI tool for something simple and received an answer that felt generic, confusing or completely different from what you imagined?
It is easy to assume that the AI is not good enough. But sometimes, the real problem is that it did not receive enough direction.
Think of AI like a talented assistant who cannot read your mind. If you say, “Write a post for my business,” it has to guess your business, audience, tone, platform and goal. The more it guesses, the less personal the result becomes.
Learning how to write better AI prompts helps you reduce those guesses. You do not need technical language or a complicated formula. You simply need to explain what you want clearly.
“A good prompt does not need to sound intelligent. It needs to make your intention clear.”
If you are completely new to prompting, start with our
beginner’s guide to understanding AI prompts.
Then use the seven tips below to improve the results you receive.
1. Start with a clear task
Begin your prompt with the exact action you want the AI to complete. Words such as write, explain, summarise, compare, create and rewrite make your request easier to understand.
Too vague: Tell me about skincare.
Better: Write a short Instagram caption explaining three simple skincare habits for people with busy schedules.
The second prompt immediately tells the AI what to create, where it will be used and what the content should cover.
2. Explain who the content is for
A message written for first-time business owners should not sound like one written for experienced marketers. Mentioning your audience helps the AI choose the right language, examples and level of detail.
Example: Explain email marketing to small-business owners who have never created a newsletter before. Use simple English and avoid technical terms.
Your audience could be Nigerian entrepreneurs, international customers, parents, students, church members, beauty clients or property investors. Choose the description that genuinely fits your goal instead of adding locations or labels unnecessarily.
3. Give the AI useful context
Context is the background information the AI needs before it can do a good job. This could include your brand, product, campaign goal, customer problem or the platform where the content will appear.
Example: I run a small cake business in Lagos. Write a WhatsApp promotion for customers ordering birthday cakes. The goal is to encourage early bookings without sounding pushy.
Notice how the prompt provides only useful details. You do not need to tell the AI your entire life story. Give it the information that can change the answer.
4. Describe the result you want
Words such as “good,” “beautiful” and “professional” mean different things to different people. Describe what the finished work should actually look or sound like.
- State the desired length.
- Choose a tone: friendly, confident, warm or persuasive.
- Request a structure: paragraphs, steps, table or bullet points.
- Mention anything the AI should include or avoid.
Example: Write a friendly product description of no more than 120 words. Begin with the customer’s problem, explain two benefits and end with a gentle call to action. Avoid exaggerated promises.
5. Add an example when words are not enough
Sometimes it is easier to show the AI what you mean. If you have a caption, email or product description whose style you like, include a short example and ask the AI to follow its structure without copying it.
You can also explain what you dislike. For example: “Do not make it sound corporate,” or “Avoid clichés such as ‘unlock your potential.’” This gives the AI clearer creative boundaries.
Never paste private customer records, passwords, confidential company documents or sensitive personal information into an AI tool.
6. Break large requests into smaller steps
Asking for a complete campaign, website or business plan in one sentence can produce a shallow answer. For bigger projects, work with the AI step by step.
- Ask it to identify the audience and goal.
- Request ideas or an outline.
- Choose the strongest direction.
- Develop each section separately.
- Review and combine the finished work.
This approach gives you more control. It also makes it easier to notice and correct weak ideas before they enter the final content.
7. Treat the first answer as a draft
Even a strong prompt may not produce the perfect answer immediately. That is normal. Read the response and tell the AI exactly what should change.
- “Make the introduction more direct.”
- “Use simpler English.”
- “Give me three more specific examples.”
- “Remove repeated ideas.”
- “Make the call to action sound less pushy.”
This process is called refinement. You are not starting again; you are guiding the AI closer to what you want.
A simple prompt formula to remember
Task + Context + Audience + Requirements + Format
Example: Write a Facebook post for my Abuja-based property business. The audience is young professionals interested in buying their first home. Explain three benefits of planning early, use a reassuring tone, keep it under 180 words and end with a question.
You will not need every part of this formula for every request. A simple task may need only one sentence. A detailed project may need more context and structure.
Before you send your next prompt
Take ten seconds and ask yourself:
- Is my task clear?
- Did I identify the audience?
- Did I provide the necessary context?
- Did I describe the tone and format?
- Can the AI understand what a successful answer looks like?
Better prompting is not about using impressive words. It is about communicating your idea clearly. When you provide direction, context and useful feedback, AI becomes much more helpful for content creation, marketing, research and everyday business tasks.
